Lechlade Marina to Abingdon Marina by narrowboat
It is 40 miles and 15 locks from Lechlade Marina to Abingdon Marina, about 14 hours 28 minutes of cruising, comfortably done in 3 days at 6 hours a day. The route is checked against live closure notices from the Canal & River Trust and the other navigation authorities, and is currently planned around the 3 active stoppages on its waterways (last checked 28 Aug 2026).
Recalculated 6 Aug 2026 against live closures.
The upper Thames is the river at its most rural: narrow, winding and almost empty above Oxford. From Lechlade Marina, the head of navigation for most boats, the route passes St John’s Lock and its statue of Old Father Thames, then meanders past Kelmscott, Radcot and Newbridge between watermeadows the whole way. Below Oxford the river broadens for the final reach down to Abingdon, one of the prettiest towns on the Thames.
